Children of the British Empire - Introduction

The British had been exploring and had held land in India for centuries, but from 1858, India was ruled by Britain, so the British Army had to be there to protect and look after it.

What was life like for those soldiers? What about their families? What was it like to grow up in India?

This web unit will help you to find the answers to these questions, using original documents and records from the time.

To start investigating, choose one of the options of the left hand side.
