Welcome to Keys to the Past. This is an exciting Heritage Lottery Funded project launched in 2003, which unlocks the archaeological secrets of County Durham and Northumberland. This website provides access to a complete record of the archaeology of the two counties, from the smallest prehistoric flint to the largest medieval castle. Archaeological contractors are advised that reports required for planning purposes will not be accepted if this website is used as the main source of information. This is due to the fact that only a precis of the data is presented here. The website is not currently being updated, as a project is under way to update the technology it uses and also improve the site.
