| Spredden dates back to the 13th century when it was described as a hamlet in 1262. It was attacked by the Scots in 1391 and does not seem to have survived the medieval period. This type of settlement is called a deserted medieval village. Today, there are a few earthworks near High Barns Farm, but the precise location of the village is not known.
