Keys to the Past

Roman Road (Corbridge)

The Roman road known as Dere Street runs north of Corbridge. Its course can be seen on an aerial photograph of this area. In places the road can still be seen as an earthwork. However, excavations in the area did not find the remains of the road material itself. It may have been destroyed by later road building on the same site. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.

Reference number: N8712
Historical period: Roman (AD43 to AD410)
Legal status: Scheduled Ancient Monument
