| This was the site of the medieval village of Portgate. A fortified tower was recorded at the site. It was probably built as a defence against reivers. The earthworks of a number of small farmsteads can be seen, and the tower probably stood in this area. All that can be seen at the site now is a small farm and a cottage. See also:
