Howtel tower house (Kilham)

These are the remains of a fortified tower, first recorded in 1541 as having being partly destroyed in 1496. It remained in use until the 17th century. The ruined walls stand three floors high. The walls are over 2m thick at basement level and are made from a hard local stone. In the 19th century, a dovecote was built into the tower, but these have now been removed. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
