Branshaw Bastle and Branshaw deserted medieval village (Otterburn)

Branshaw Bastle and a deserted medieval village of the same name can both be seen at this location. The bastle was probably built in the early 17th century and, together with the surrounding farm buildings, is partially ruined. Earthworks near the bastle are the remains of an earlier settlement that we know about from a document written in 1552. Branshaw Bastle and deserted medieval village are part of a Scheduled Monument, also including part of the Roman road called Dere Street, protected by law.

Reference number: N8165
Historical period: Medieval (1066 to 1540)
Post-medieval (1540 to 1900)
