Keys to the Past

Farmstead south-west of Blackwool Law (Rochester and Byrness)

The remains of a building, 20m long by 6m wide, lie on the hillslope above Blackwool Law. They were originally described as a medieval shieling with field clearance cairns nearby, but more recently as a 17th or 18th century farmstead. Two small pens lie nearby and there are low walls and banks all around.

Reference number: N8108
Historical period: Medieval (1066 to 1540)
