| Birkshaw House is a bastle built into a steeply sloping hillside and was used as farmhouse until 1895.It is roughly rectangular in shape and about 10m by 7m in size. The walls are up to 1.2m thick. The original main door was in the first floor with ground floor access only to the byre. It was probably built in the late 16th or early 17th century as a protection against raiders.
