Keys to the Past

Medieval Settlement (Bardon Mill)

This site includes the remains medieval and post-medieval settlement. The remains of several rectangular buildings can be seen as well as a number of enclosures probably used to keep animals. There is also a sunken road leading to fields containing ridge and furrow, the remains left by medieval ploughing, which surround the site. Parts of at least two ruined stone bastles can also be seen. These were fortified farmhouses built as protection against raiders. These show that settlement continued into the 16th and 17th centuries when most bastles were built. The remains are probably associated with Bradley Hall immediately to the south-west. This site is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
