| This settlement dates to the Iron Age and is built on the top of Craster Heugh. Here, the natural defences of the cliffs would have helped make this a very well protected place to live. On the sides where there are no cliffs, up to three ramparts and a ditch have been built. These stand up to 1.8m high in places and some are very wide; the outer rampart is over 10m wide. The entrance lies through the south-east side. Inside the settlement there are probably remains of buildings buried beneath the surface, but none are visible above ground. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law. See also: Source of Reference Local History of Craster Location of this site on a map, with option to view historical maps.
