| In the early 19th century it was possible to see the foundations of a tower in a field on the north side of Scremerston. It was mentioned in 15th and 16th century lists, which said it had a barmkin, or enclosure. However, there are no visible remains today. Towers, known as peels, were often built in Northern Northumberland, as protection against raids from Scotland and local outlaws.
