| The village of Prendwick was raided by the Scots in 1533 an d1543. A local man, Thomas Alder, built a small tower as a defence, and it is mentioned in documents in 1541 and 1584. However, the tower has since disappeared, and its site is not known. Small pele towers and fortified houses, known as bastles, were common in the 16th century in this area, and are a clear indication of the troubled nature of life in the Borders in this period.
