| The site of Heaton Castle is now largely built over with farm buildings. But amongst these buildings is one which is much older than the rest. It is built of large squared stones and has two massive buttresses along one side. There are openings of several periods, including some blocked loops and a 16th or 17th century doorway. Inside on the ground floor is a barrel vault. An external flight of stone stairs leads to the first floor. In character, the building appears to have been a strong house, probably built about 1600, but it may contain older masonry that may be the curtain wall of the medieval castle. Beyond the building are slight earthworks which may be further remains of the castle. An Elizabethan drawing of the castle is known, and it shows a quadrangular castle lying in ruins. This is a Grade II* Listed Building protected by law. See also: Source of Reference Local History of Cornhill-on-Tweed Location of this site on a map, with option to view historical maps.
