Keys to the Past

Morpeth Castle (Morpeth)

Morpeth Castle was built between 1342 and 1349. The gatehouse and the curtain wall are the only remaining parts of the castle. It was restored 1858-60 by the Earl of Carlisle and was occupied until the 1960s after which vandals damaged it. In 1990 the gatehouse was repaired. Archaeological investigation at this point showed that much of the gatehouse had been rebuilt in the late 17th or 18th century. This is a Scheduled Monument and a Grade I Listed Building protected by law.
