| Butterknowes Farmhouse is quite a complex building which has been added to over the centuries. The oldest part of the building is the main two storey block which represents a late 16th or early 17th century bastle. It measures 10.2m by 6.1m and the original walls can be seen in parts of the north wall. Here the wall is built of large roughly shaped blocks of stone with massive quoins visible and measures 1.2m thick. No original features can be seen inside the house but the remains of an internal stone staircase were discovered during alterations in the 20th century and may be an early feature of the building. This is a Grade II Listed Building protected by law. See also: Source of Reference Local History of Brinkburn and Hesleyhurst Location of this site on a map, with option to view historical maps.
