Keys to the Past

Bantling Castle/East Castle; lime kilns. (Annfield Plain)

This is the site of a series of impressive lime kilns. They were built for the Stanhope and Tyne Railroad Company in 1835. The coal and limestone was fed from the top, where a series of small tramways brought stone from where it was offloaded from the railway. The lime made in these kilns was mainly used to improve soil quality.

Reference number: D765
Historical period: Post-medieval (1540 to 1900)
