Keys to the Past

St John's Chapel, Weardale House; possible motte. (St. John's Chapel)

A large (up to 60m across) grass and tree-covered mound with a flat top stands at Weardale House. It is unlikely to be a burial mound, but it was perhaps a medieval (1066 to 1540) motte. Local traditions mention the site as the burial site of an unknown king.

Reference number: D2259
