Durham City, Maiden Castle; possibly Medieval defended site. (Durham City)

Archaeologists exploring Maiden Castle found that the hill had been fortified two or three times in the medieval period, probably in the 15th or 16th century. A stone wall and a wooden fence surrounded it. This is a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law.
