| This is the site of the medieval castle of Middleham, which stood on a high ridge. Only slight traces of the building can still be seen. A few banks and ditches and some low stone walls are all that can be seen. It was once the main house of the Bishops of Durham from the Norman Conquest (1066) to the end of the 14th century. This is a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law. See also: Source of Reference Local History of Bishop Middleham Location of this site on a map, with option to view historical maps.
