Chesterhope Common quarries (Corsenside)

These are the best preserved 19th century iron ore quarries in the Ridsdale area. To begin with they were created to supply the Ridsdale Ironworks, but later supplied Armstrong's furnaces on Tyneside. The tips of spoil show a complex sequence of workings from different levels and, as the nearest quarry to the ironworks, it may be the earliest.
