Ridsdale western calcining kilns (Birtley)

Early Ordnance Survey maps show a set of about eight calcining kilns lying near Calf Close along the east side of a now disused railway. They are associated with extensive ironstone workings nearby. Although these kilns are not very well preserved they are rare in England and therefore of some importance. Trees have now been planted on part of the site.
