Birtley Wood bloomery (Birtley)

This is a medieval iron smelting site which lies on a raised spur near Blind Burn. A range of features associated with smelting survive at the site, including slag mounds and a possible building platform. The ore for smelting probably came from the ironstone workings near Pitlands Farm. Iron working is recorded in this area in the 14th century and may linked with this bloomery.
