Roman altar (Melkridge)
In 1838, an inscribed Roman altar was found in the foundations of a cottage at Hardriding. Archaeologists think the altar was either part of a local shrine to the god Cocidius, or it was moved from the nearby Roman fort known as Chesterholm (Vindolanda).
