Cawfields Roman milestones (Haltwhistle)
In 1882, three Roman milestones were found lying on the south side of the Military Way, not far from Milecastle 42. They were all roughly cylindrical in shape and each would have stood just over one metre high. Two had third century inscriptions carved into them and these were taken to Chesters Museum but the other still lies by the road. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
|Historical period:||Roman (43 to 410)|
