Turret 40a, Hadrian's Wall (Henshaw)
This turret on Hadrian's Wall was first discovered in 1912 and was excavated in 1946. Excavation showed that it had been almost completely destroyed during the Roman period. Today it has no features visible on the ground, but survives buried beneath the surface. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
