Needle's Eye Iron Age enclosure (Berwick upon Tweed)

An aerial photograph of this site shows a cropmark of a large enclosure surrounded by several ditches. A geophysical survey of the site in 2004 successfully identified parts of the cropmark and excavations in 2005 found buried remains. These showed that there were at least three major phases of activity: the earliest was a prehistoric ditched enclosure; the second an Early Iron Age palisaded enclosure; and the third an Early Iron Age enclosure with internal features. The excavations in 2005 also found evidience for saltmaking.
