Keys to the Past

Round Cairn (Belsay)

A round cairn, 10m in diameter, is on the east slopes of Sharp Law close to Bygate Farm. The cairn is built from stone and earth and shows signs of having been disturbed at its centre in the past. A cist or stone-coffin containing a human skull and a whole Bronze Age pot recorded from the area in the early 19th century is though to have come from the centre of this cairn. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
