Memorial statue of an infantryman at the junction of Wharton Street and Church Street. Soldier stands on a squared plinth atop a pedestal with rounded edges and a step. The memorial stands on a concrete base platform behind black railings. The whole is located within a triangular landscaped area at the junction of the roads with brick-tiled walkways, low crenelated walls (the high sections of wall linked by iron railings) and flower beds. Originally unveiled in 1921, the soldier statue was removed in the 1960's due to damage caused by vandalism. The statue was stored in a stonemasons yard until it was restored and eventually replaced on top of the memorial in 2007. The memorial is dedicated to those of the town who died in the First World War and Second World War. The dedication and the names of the fallen are incised on the faces of the plinth, names in three columns on each side (1-2).
