Richard Murray Hospital, Consett (Blackhill)

Richard Murray Hospital was founded in 1914 (1) and located to the north of Blackhill in Consett, south of Shotley Bridge and east of Benfieldside. The hospital first appears on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1919-1926 (2) and in the First World War was the site of the 12th Durham VA Hospital (3). The hospital shows up on aerial photographs from the 1940's (4) but it is recorded that the hospital closed in 1971 (1). Modern aerial photographs (5) show the site is now dominated by a housing estate called Murray Court.
