Round cairn at Hole Farm (Bellingham)

NY 867846. A cist comprising four slabs with internal axes of circa 70cms and 40cms, and 45cms in depth, was found in the centre of a knoll, 9m in diameter, at Hole Farm in 1972. The top of the cist was at the present ground level, there was no covering slab or floor and nothing but soil and coal shale was found inside. The mound is possibly a barrow or, more likely, a natural knoll into which the cist was inserted. (1)

NY 86708467. The remains of the cist are still in situ and lie 2.5m of the north wall of the bastle (NY 88 SE 14). As stated above the mound appears to be a natural knoll. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2)
