Salters Road (Alnham)
((NT 87511377 - NT 99041159) Salters Road (Track). (1)
Salters Road: An old Drove Road. (2)
Salters Road, is the name given to part of a route supposedly used by medieval salt traffic from the salt pans of the coast through Rothbury to Alnham then onto the junction with Clennel Street (NT 81 SE 9) where it ascends to the Border. From Alnham to the Clennel Street junction the route is represented by a grassy track. (3)
Salter's Road runs north and west through the Cheviot hills from Alnham towards the Scottish border where it joins Clennell Street. (4)
[Two NRHE records for Salter's Road, NRHE UID 2414 has the same information included above, NRHE UID 1034135 has additional information which is added below]
(NT 9500 1429 - NT 9901 1096) Salters Road (NAT) (4a)
Within NT 91 SE from NT 9500 1429 eastwards as far as St Michael's Church at Alnham (NT 9901 1096), Salters Road can be traced for most of the way as a well-worn trackway, in use as a walker's path as it crosses open moorland. It is best-preserved at the approaches to distinct stream crossings where it may survive as a hollow way or series of hollow ways, up to 0.6 m deep and about 2.0 m wide at best; a good example of this is at NT 9884 1110 (NT 9811/27). To the E of Alnham the track is lost in the modern road and field pattern. (4b)
