This is a red-brick building built in 1925 as a memorial to men of the village who fought and died in the First World War. The front elevation has three gables, the left and right gables forming wings either side of a recessed section in four bays that has a render attached to the walls and decorative timbers in the gable top above the two central bays. Commissioned by the War Memorial Committee with funds raised via public subscription and the Miners' Welfare Committee. As well as being a war memorial in itself the building also contains a memorial roll of honour that was transferred here from the village Methodist Chapel that closed in the 1980's. (1-2)

In 2009 a memorial garden was created as part of a regeneration project around the 19th C pant on the village Green which added to the names from the memorial in the institute. (1)
