St. Bartholomew's Church was built in 1842-43 to serve the settlement of New Thornley that is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey maps of 1856-1865 (1). The church was, at first a chapelry attached to Kelloe (2) but became the main parish church of Thornley as the settlement developed around it. The church appears on aerial photographs of 2006 (3) but has been demolished by 2008 (4) showing as an area of bare ground surrounded by the grassy churchyard and gravestones. The church once contained a number of features dedicated as war memorials, most of which were transferred to St. Saviour's Church in Shotton after the demolition (5-7).
