A change to the village memorial during the restoration of 2005 was the addition of a short polished granite obelisk in front of the main wall dedicated to 2nd Lieutenant John Youll, V.C. The obelisk is around 4ft high, tapering, surmounted by a domed top and resting on two steps. Front face has a polished black panel featuring a photograph of Youll under the heading "Thornley Remembers". Under this are the details of his death: "Second Lieutenant / John Scott Jack Youll V.C. / 11th Service Battalion / Northumberland Fusiliers / killed in action Italy / 27th October 1918, aged 21". Black panel on the rear face carries details of Youll's life whilst the right side of the obelisk has a panel with the citation for the Victoria Cross underneath four coloured motifs of war medals.
