Church of St Andrew AKA St. Andrew's Church, Great Aycliffe (Aycliffe)

The church at Aycliffe is dedicated to St Andrew, though it is possible that it was originally dedicated to St Acca. The earliest parts of the church are of 10th century Anglo-Saxon date. The main chancel was built in the mid 12th century and the tower was altered in the early 13th century. A belfry was added in the 15th century and a south porch in 1835.

In the chancel there is a dedication plaque to a former vicar of the church that also commemorates his son, a soldier killed in the First World War (1).

This is a Grade 1 listed building protected by law.

Early English with remains of Anglo-Saxon church. Evidence of Saxon nave and tower; circa 1190 Transitional nave and chancel; circa 1220 upper stages of tower refaced and south aisle added; 15th century belfry; 1835 south porch; 1881-2 restoration by Ewan Christian included addition of new north aisle, organ chamber and vestry and rebuilding of chancel south wall.
